Since Nga Pihi 1 & 2 were launched in Te Tau o Te Reo Maori (Maori Language Year) by Sir John Bennet of Te Kohanga Reo National Trust, these albums have been in constant demand.
Nga Pihi 3 is a fresh, new collection of simple, easy-to-learn songs in Maori, featuring 8 delightful new songs, and 4 fresh arrangements of traditional waiata. Aunty Tawai's input takes the Nga Pihi series to a new depth.
The Nga Pihi 3 Songbook (available separately) includes translations, melody lines & guitar chords, large-type word sheets, and teaching notes with wonderful Putake (cultural roots) from Aunty for each waiata.
The title of this series, Nga Pihi (young shoots), was chosen to reflect both children and beginners in te reo (Maori language), for whom the resource was envisioned.
Nga Pihi is carefully structured to focus on simplicity, repetition, variety, delight and spiritual values.
The waiata (songs), are easy to learn and sing, teaching Maori language through music. The music also communicate the Maori way of life, both traditional and contemporary, and this knowledge is further extended in the songbook, where Aunty gives Putake (cultural roots) for each waiata.
This latest in the Nga Pihi series, features many young singers, thanks to Lester Mohi and his class at Glenview school Porirua, and vocalists Norton Kahu and Olivia Reid.
These youthful voices brim over with enthusiasm and charm. Lester also performs on the album, together with Vicky Teariki. Backings feature acoustic and electric guitar, live bass, ukulele, synths & keyboards.
The songbook, available separately, features translations, melody lines, guitar chords, teaching notes and large-font A4 lyric sheets for each song, which can be displayed for a class to read.
